This fair trade, organic Washed Sidamo was grown and harvested through the Nura Korate Cooperative and processed through the Sidamo Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, one of the largest Fair Trade cooperatives in Ethiopia.
The coop was founded when members from 35 different Ethiopian coops came together with a common goal, exporting their coffee directly to specialty markets. The members of the cooperative use the revenue from fair trade sales in the US and Europe to continue their commitment to organic production. (hosting workshops on composting and natural fertilizers), equipment purchases and repairs, and lessening their dependence on imported foods.
The Cooperative Union has been Fair Trade Certified since 2003. Obtaining Fair Trade pricing and exporting their high-quality coffee directly to the international market has enabled the Union to implement various social and production improvements that benefit the member cooperatives.
The union has given scholarships to hundreds of members' children and has funded three new elementary school buildings. They've built roads in the communities, constructed warehouses, and installed electricity.
